The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 30, 2007

Prayer:

Savior, thy dying love
Thou gavest me;
Nor should I aught withhold,
Dear Lord, from thee.
In love my soul would bow,
My heart fulfill its vow,
Some off'ring bring thee now,
Something for thee. (Christian Worship 304:5)

Worship Focus: Using earthly wealth to serve our Lord

Order of Service: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 226, 421, 524, 334

God's Word

First Lesson Amos 8:4-7

Amos calls us to repent from loving wealth more than loving God and others.

Psalm 38, p. 81

Knowing our sin, we call out to the Lord with repentant hearts.

Second Lesson 1 Timothy 2:1-8

Serve your Lord with earthly wealth, for he paid the ultimate price to ransom you.

Gospel Luke 16:1-13

Jesus teaches us to use earthly wealth to bring eternal benefits to ourselves and others. Therefore, wisely use your wealth to spread the Gospel and help those in need. For then instead of serving money, we are serving our Lord, who ransomed us to be his own.

Amos 8:4-7

How Much We Need the LORD to Forget!

  1. Describe life in Amos' day.
  2. How does lack of love show itself in . . .
    1. our worship life
    2. our business life
    3. our charity
  3. How has God forgotten our lovelessness?
