Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word;
Curb those who by deceit or sword
Would seek to overthrow your Son
And to destroy what he has done.
(Christian Worship 203:1)

Order of Service: The Common Service, p. 15

God's Word

First Lesson Jeremiah 31:31-34

The new covenant is the promise of forgiveness through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Know it in your heart.

Psalm 46, p. 84

Be still as you rest secure in the fortress of God's forgiveness.

Second Lesson Romans 3:19-28

The Gospel promises a righteousness from God. Our sin makes us unrighteous. But God justifies you and declares you righteous, because he credits you with the righteousness that comes from Jesus. He is the sacrifice that ransoms you with his blood. Believe this promise of full and free forgiveness in Jesus.

Gospel John 8:31-36

Jesus brings freedom from slavery to sin to you who believe.

John 8:31-36

Free!

  1. Free from slavery to sin
    1. Who has been chained by slavery to sin?
    2. What cannot free us from this slavery?
    3. What must we confess about our own power and ability?
  2. Free through the word of truth from Jesus
    1. How do you learn the truth that frees you from slavery to sin?
    2. How do we stay in the Word?
    3. What is the truth that God's Word reveals to set you free?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
