The First Sunday of Advent

December 2, 2007

Come, O long-expected Jesus,
Born to set your people free;
From our sins and fears release us
By your death on Calvary.
Israel's Strength and Consolation,
Hope to all the earth impart,
Dear Desire of ev'ry nation,
Joy of ev'ry longing heart.
(Christian Worship 6:1)

The Christmas Message Shines Out

  1. A message for you and others
    1. Why is it amazing that Christmas should include Gentiles, like you and me?
    2. What three things do we need to remember as we seek to understand this prophecy from Isaiah?
    3. What New Testament reality is pictured by God's temple in this prophecy?
    4. For whom does the Christmas message shine?
    5. To whom can you shine out as a Christmas light?
  2. A message of justice and peace
    1. What brings the Christmas message of justice and peace?
    2. What verdict would God's justice give us if there were no Christmas?
    3. Because of Christmas, what does God's justice say to you?
    4. What kind of peace does God's Christmas justice bring?

News and Notes

Youth Group: Swimming at Arrowwood has been postponed until January.

Advent Fellowship: Come and join us for some refreshments before church, served by the Ladies' Society during Advent. A free will offering will be taken to support the Ladies' Society in their work both inside and outside our congregation. Supplemental funds from Thrivent will be asked for.

Artificial Christmas Tree: This year we still plan to have a real tree as in the past, but it's been suggested that we might be served well by an artificial Christmas tree in the future. The best time to buy one would be right after Christmas. If you have an opinion on whether to get an artificial tree or not, please speak with a council member (names are posted in the narthex). In the regular council meeting on December 10, the council will discuss what further action, if any, will be taken.

Service of Christian Carols: On Wednesday, December 12, we will gather at 7:00 p.m. to sing some of the favorite Christian Carols of the season. Christmas refreshments will be served afterwards. Bring a friend and share the joy of the season. If you want to have a say in what carols we sing, please pick up a tally sheet in the narthex and fill it out. Sheets need to be returned by next Sunday.

MLC Christmas Concert: Martin Luther College invites you to a festival of choral and instrumental music as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. The concert is December 16 at 3:00pm at MLC in New Ulm.
