The Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 23, 2007

Prayer:

O Jesus Christ,
Your manger is
My paradise where my soul is reclining.
For there, O Lord,
We find the Word
Made flesh for us -- your grace is brightly shining.
(Christian Worship 40:1)

The Fourth Sunday of Advent

December 23, 2007

Focus: Immanuel, God with us

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 19, 23, 36, 53:3,4

God's Word

First Lesson Isaiah 7:10-14

Immanuel, born of the virgin, is God's sign to us that he will deliver us.

Psalm 24, p. 73

Lift up your head. Immanuel comes.

Second Lesson Romans 1:1-7

This baby is Jesus Christ our Lord. He is our God who came to die for us and then rise from the dead in glory.

Gospel Matthew 1:18-25

As the angel explained to Joseph, Mary had not been unfaithful. She was a virgin. The child within her was a miracle of God. For this child was God. He was Immanuel, God with us. He had come to save us from our sins. So his name is Jesus, which means “the Lord saves.”

Isaiah 7:10-14

Faith Looks to Where the Lord Points

  1. Why is the Lord's patience with King Ahaz so astonishing?
  2. How do we, like Ahaz, fail to look to where the Lord points?
  3. What does faith see as it looks to the Child born from the virgin?
  4. Where does God point you to in order to give your faith a solid rock to stand firm on?
