The First Sunday after Christmas

December 30, 2007

Prayer:

Then, gracious God, in years to come
Whatever may betide us,
Right onward through our journey home,
Oh, stay at hand to guide us,
Nor leave us till, at close of life,
Safe from all peril, toil, and strife,
Heav'n shall enfold and hide us.
(Christian Worship 69:5)

God's Word

First Lesson Isaiah 63:7-9

Jesus was born to share our distress and save us. What confidence that gives us to face the year ahead.

Psalm 2, p. 65

Jesus rules over the nations. The kings of the earth cannot dethrone our King. So live this year without fear.

Second Lesson Galatians 4:4-7

God's Son became one of us to redeem us, so that we too may share the rights of sons under our heavenly Father's care.

Gospel Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23

The heavenly Father protected his Son from wicked King Herod. So also his protection cares for you, as you start a new year.

Galatians 4:4-7

Confidently Live Out the New Year
as Sons of God

  1. Celebrating the ransom that sets you free
    1. Why did we need to be ransomed?
    2. Why must our ransom be paid by the one who is both God and man?
    3. Why and how do we celebrate this ransom?
  2. Confiding in your Father through the Holy Spirit
    1. What is one right you have as a son of God which strengthens you to face the new year with confidence?
  3. Contemplating your inheritance
    1. How does contemplating our inheritance in Jesus give us confidence for the year ahead?
