The Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 2, 2008

Prayer:

Your cords of love my Savior,
Bind me to you forever;
I am no longer mine.
To you I gladly tender
All that my life can render
And all I have to you resign.
(Christian Worship 113:5)

God's Word

First Lesson Genesis 37:1-11

Listen to the promises God makes to Joseph in a dream. Hold on to the promises God makes to you in his Word.

Psalm 42-43, p. 82

Only the light of the Lord's promises quenches our thirst.

Second Lesson Romans 8:1-10

Jesus' sacrifice freed you from condemnation in order for you live according to the Spirit.

Gospel Matthew 20:17-28

Jesus teaches us to humbly serve each other. For he has done the ultimate service for us, giving his life as the ransom in our place.

Genesis 37:1-11

Confidence for Life Flows
from the Lord's Promises

  1. Confidence even in messiest situations
    1. How do God's mercy and promises shine through the messed-up family life of Jacob and Joseph?
    2. What promises will bring us confidence even though we mess up?
  2. Confidence to serve under any circumstances
    1. Describe how Joseph served.
    2. Where and when do we serve as we hold on the Lord's promises?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

Feb. 27 - Pilate testifies about kingship

The God of the Covenant: Starting March 16 we begin a new Sunday morning Bible class. In the Old Testament God revealed himself with a series of wonderful words. Yet it's so easy to pass over these words without experiencing what God wants to give us. Over six weeks we want to come to better understand six of these words and the everyday hope and peace they bring us.

Financial Report: At the end of February the General Fund balance was $3088.96, down from $3,865.07 at the beginning of the month. $1,783.50 has been given in Jan. & Feb. toward our $10,000 annual mission goal.
