Jesus Shows His Love

Hymn 136: “'Twas on that Dark, that Doleful Night”

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

P: Let us pray.

C: Lord Jesus, as you loved your disciples to the very end, so love us. Through your Word and through your body and blood, bring us the testimony of your love. Open our hearts to love one another, even as you have loved us. We pray in your name, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Confession of Sins

P: Dearly beloved, we have failed to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. We have failed to love our neighbor as ourselves. We have betrayed his great love for us. Therefore, let us confess our sins before our God.

C: Before you, God, Judge of all, with grief and shame I humbly fall. I see my sins against you, Lord, my sins of thought and deed and word. They press me sore; to you I flee: O God, be merciful to me!

O Lord, my God, to you I pray: Oh, cast me not in wrath away! Let your good Spirit ne'er depart, But let him draw to you my heart that truly penitent I be: O God, be merciful to me!

O Jesus, let your precious blood be to my soul a cleansing flood. Turn not, O Lord, your guest away, But grant that justified I may go to my house at peace to be: O God, be merciful to me!

P: Upon this your confession, I, as your called pastor speaking for our Lord and Savior, forgive you all your sins. As the Lamb of God, Jesus has sacrificed himself for you. His blood marks your heart so that death passes over. His spotless righteousness clothes you as his bride. Go in peace and live in love, reflecting the unsurpassed love that Jesus has shown to you.

C: Amen.

P: In the peace and joy of forgiveness, let us stand and praise our Savior-God for his wondrous love.

C: (sung)

1) What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this, O my soul!

What wondrous love is this

That caused the Lord of bliss

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,

To bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

2) To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing;

To God and to the Lamb I will sing;

To God and to the Lamb,

Who is the great I Am,

While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,

While millions join the theme, I will sing.

Just as the blood of the Passover lamb marked the doors of the Israelites' homes, Jesus' blood marks our hearts so that eternal death passes over us.

The Lord's love delivers from death.

Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 11:23-28

Sermon 1 John 4:10, 11

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. (NIV)

Distribution Hymn 135 “The Death of Jesus Christ, Our Lord”

Stripping of the Altar

This symbolizes how our Lord was abandoned in the Garden of Gethsemane when the disciples fled at his arrest. We sing hymn 125 during this time. Then we leave in silence to return tomorrow to remember his death and then to come rejoicing on Easter morning.
