Good Friday

Service of Darkness

What wondrous love is this that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul!

P: A Lamb goes uncomplaining forth, our guilt and evil bearing

C: And, laden with the sins of earth, none else the burden sharing.

I am thirsty.

John 19:28, 29 Psalm 22:1-8; 14-21

P: O sacred head, now wounded, with grief and shame weighed down,

C: Now scornfully surrounded, with thorns your only crown,

C: Yet, though despised and gory, I joy to call you mine.

The Sixth Words

It is finished.
(John 19:30 NIV)

John 19:30a Psalm 2

P: Here we have a firm foundation, here the refuge of the lost;

C: Christ's the rock of our salvation, his the name of which we boast.

P: Lamb of God, for sinners wounded, sacrifice to cancel guilt --

C: None shall ever be confounded who on him their hope have built.

The Seventh Words

Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
(Luke 23:46 NIV)

Luke 23:46; Matthew 27:51-56; John 19:31-42

P: Lord, be my consolation, my shield when I must die;

C: Remind me of your passion when my last hour draws nigh.

P: My eyes will then behold you, upon your cross will dwell;

C: My heart will then enfold you -- who dies in faith dies well!

The last candle is removed
symbolizing the burial of our Lord
who is our Light and our Salvation.

Lord's Prayer (all in unison)

The tomb rends with a loud sound;
the Light returns, for our Lord rises.

Solo: “Were You There”

Please leave in silence, reflecting on what your Savior suffered to rescue you from sin and death.

Then come Easter Sunday rejoicing that he lives,
and you, with all believers, will live with him forever.
