The Third Sunday of Easter

April 6, 2008

Lord Jesus,

Mine is the sin but yours the righteousness;

Mine is the guilt but yours the cleansing blood.

Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace:

Your blood, your righteousness, O Lord, my God.

(Christian Worship 315:4)

God's Word

First Lesson Acts 2:14, 36-47

The Holy Spirit worked faith in the hearts of those first Christians and that Easter faith showed in their lives.

Psalm 67, p. 91

Easter faith rejoices in praise to the Lord.

Second Lesson 1 Peter 1:17-21

Because of the blood of the Lamb of God, who has been raised from the dead, we live as strangers with our faith and hope in God.

Gospel Luke 24:13-35

Just as Jesus used the Scriptures to work Easter faith in the disciples hearts, so also the Holy Spirit uses the same Scriptures so that we too believe and shine out with the Easter faith.

1 Peter 1:17-21

Live in Fear

  1. Why is it spiritually deadly to live without fear?
  2. What are sinful sources of fear?
  3. How does the Holy Spirit work the right fear in our hearts?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

What a blessing children are! How wonderful to have them in church with us! Bringing young children to worship can certainly be a strain on parents. But what great good the Holy Spirit can do in their young hearts through the Gospel as it's preached and sung! And by coming they learn how to behave in church.

Yet sometimes young children can act up, disturbing the worship of others. So we provide speakers in the narthex and basement, so that parents can take their child out and still hear the service. After the child has been quieted or disciplined, coming back to the pew teaches them that we come to church to listen. Let's keep working together to train the next generation.

The God of the Covenant: In the Old Testament God revealed himself with a series of wonderful words. Yet it's so easy to pass over these words without experiencing what God wants to give us.

The 3rd word for April 13 is כבוד "glory.”

“Thank You” Concert: Chris Driesbach from New Orleans will present a concert of his Christian music here at St. John's on April 23 at 7:30pm. He has been touring WELS congregations across the country as a thank you for the help his congregation received after Hurricane Katrina. Come for an evening of original music on keyboard and guitar, as Chris shares in word and song the story of the rebuilding of his church and his own journey from atheism to faith in Jesus. Bring a friend as well.
