The Fifth Sunday of Easter

April 20, 2008

You are the way; through you alone

Can we the Father find;

In you, O Christ, has God revealed

His heart and will and mind.

You are the way, the truth, the life;

Grant us that way to know,

That truth to keep, that life to win

Whose joys eternal flow. (CW 356:1, 4)

The Fifth Sunday of Easter

April 20, 2008

Focus: Only Jesus saves!

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: Hymn Sing, 141, 528, 198 (LAPPY)

God's Word

First Lesson Acts 17:1-12

Paul preached Christ crucified and risen from the dead. For only through Jesus could anyone be saved. So Paul preached even when other opposed the message. Let us, though, take his words to heart and search the Scriptures as the Bereans did.

Psalm 33, p. 79

Search the Scriptures for his Word is right and true.

Second Lesson 1 Peter 2:4-10

You are God's chosen people built on the Living Stone. Jesus alone is the Cornerstone, for only Jesus saves.

Gospel John 14:1-12

Jesus has prepared a heavenly home for us. We enter that home only through Jesus. In him we have seen the Father. For Jesus alone is the way to the Father. Only Jesus saves.

1 Peter 2:4-10

You're Built on the Living Stone

  1. You, who believe in the Rejected One
    1. What do you believe?
    2. How do we stay built on Jesus, our Cornerstone?
    3. Why can your faith be sure that Jesus will not crumble beneath you?
  2. You, who are now God's priesthood and people
    1. What confidence do you have as you approach the holy God?
    2. What do you have the courage to do as God's priesthood?
    3. What is your purpose as God's blood-bought people?

What a blessing children are! How wonderful to have them in church with us! Bringing young children to worship can certainly be a strain on parents. But what great good the Holy Spirit can do in their young hearts through the Gospel as it's preached and sung! And by coming they learn how to behave in church.

Yet sometimes young children can act up, disturbing the worship of others. So we provide speakers in the narthex and basement, so that parents can take their child out and still hear the service. After the child has been quieted or disciplined, coming back to the pew teaches them that we come to church to listen. Let's keep working together to train the next generation.

News and Notes

Called into glory: Funeral services for Leonard Schaefer were held yesterday at 2:00pm. Our Savior called Leonard home to heaven last Monday morning having reached the age of 98 years and 4 days. The sermon theme was “Triumphing in the Cross of Christ,” based on Galatians 6:14. The flowers today were given by Leonard's family.

Confirmation: Three students: Shae Brown, Tara Flaten, and Bryce Wilson, confess their faith in Jesus, their Savior, as they answer the examination questions today. Next week they will celebrate the rite of confirmation. May our Lord bless them and keep them faithful always.

Creeds & Confessions: Our Wednesday evening Bible class continues looking at Luther's Large and Small Catechism. This week we won't meet due to the concert Wednesday night. The following week we will see what Luther says about the 9th & 10th commandments.

The God of the Covenant: In the Old Testament God revealed himself with a series of wonderful words. Yet it's so easy to pass over these words without experiencing what God wants to give us.

The 4th word for April 27 is צדיק "righteousness.”
