The Seventh Sunday of Easter
The Ascension of our Lord

May 4, 2008

Oh, grant, dear Lord, this grace to me,

Recalling your ascension,

That I may serve you faithfully,

Adorning your redemption;

And then, when all my days will cease,

Let me depart in joy and peace

In answer to my pleading. (CW 173:3)

God's Word

First Lesson Acts 1:1-14

Jesus speaks with his disciples and then ascends into heaven. He has accomplished his mission that he came from heaven to do, his mission to save sinners.

Psalm 47, p. 85

Jesus, our God, has ascended amid shouts of joy.

Second Lesson 1 Peter 4:12-17; 5:6-11

Let your life sing alleluia to your King as your bear up under suffering with patience and love and as you commit all your cares to him who will protect you.

Gospel John 17:1-11

Jesus speaks these words on Maundy Thursday, before he is betrayed and crucified. He prays for his disciples. As our ascended King, Jesus continues to pray for us.

Psalm 47

Shout Out in Song to Your Ascended King

  1. He has ransomed you to be his people
    1. How can sinners, like us, call the holy God our King?
  2. He uses you to spread his kingdom
    1. How do you spread his kingdom?
  3. He reigns over all for you
    1. What confidence do you have because your King reigns over all?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
