The Coming of the Holy Spirit

May 11, 2008

O Source of light, our Counselor,

The Father's help to us assure.

Come down, as promised, with your fire,

And hearts with heav'nly love inspire.

Your sacred, healing message bring

To sanctify us when we sing. (CW 188:2)

God's Word

First Lesson Joel 2:28, 29

The prophet foretells how in the New Testament Church the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to see the fulfillment of prophecies.

Psalm 51b, p. 87

The Holy Spirit works in our hearts.

Second Lesson Acts 2:1-21

Through the word of God preached by Peter, the Holy Spirit works his miracle of faith in the hearts of the hearers on Pentecost.

Gospel John 16:5-11

When Jesus has completed his work and returned to the Father, he sends the Holy Spirit to do his work.

John 16:5-11

“I Am Sending You the Comforting Counselor”

  1. “For I am leaving with my mission completed”
    1. What fills your heart with grief?
    2. Why was it good for the disciples and us that Jesus leave, even though it made them feel sad?
    3. What comfort does the Holy Spirit bring to you, since Jesus' mission is completed?
  2. “For he comes to the world to work conviction”
    1. What conviction does the Holy Spirit work in regard to sin?
    2. What conviction does the Holy Spirit work in regard to righteousness?
    3. What conviction does the Holy Spirit work in regard to judgment?

What a blessing children are! How wonderful to have them in church with us! Bringing young children to worship can certainly be a strain on parents. But what great good the Holy Spirit can do in their young hearts through the Gospel as it's preached and sung! And by coming they learn how to behave in church.

Yet sometimes young children can act up, disturbing the worship of others. So we provide speakers in the narthex and basement, so that parents can take their child out and still hear the service. After the child has been quieted or disciplined, coming back to the pew teaches them that we come to church to listen. Let's keep working together to train the next generation.
