The Third Sunday after Pentecost

June 1, 2008

Prayer:

I, a sinner, come to you

With a penitent confession.

Savior, show me mercy, too;

Grant for all my sins remission.

Let these words my soul relieve --

Jesus sinners does receive.

God's Word

First Lesson Hosea 5:15-6:6

Jesus does not receive people that our righteous in their own eyes. The Israelites thought that if they said the right words, the Lord would welcome them back. But the Lord desires a heart that sees its sin and looks only to him for mercy.

Psalm 119c, p. 111

Because Jesus receives us sinners, we love to walk according to his word.

Second Lesson Romans 4:18-25

Faith trusts the Lord's promise to credit us with Jesus' righteousness. Such faith rejoices that Jesus receives sinners.

Gospel Matthew 7:9-9-13

Jesus calls Matthew to follow him.

Matthew 9:9-13

Only Sinners Need the Doctor

  1. Don't deny the disease
    1. How does Jesus expose the disease in us, even though we try to deny it?
    2. Why is this disease so dangerous?
  2. Follow the Doctor in celebration
    1. What's the Good News, which is the only medicine that heals sin-sick souls?
    2. What changes does this Good News work in us as we follow the Doctor?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

Ice cream sundaes will be served following the show. Please join us!

The theme, Jesus Plants His Word in You, is centered around farming. Like last year, we'll be showing Bible story videos for the lessons. We need volunteers to help with worksheets, crafts, music, snacks, activities. Since we are putting this together ourselves, if you have any ideas for artwork, promotion, skits, activities, crafts, etc., or have skills to share, please talk with pastor. Sign up in the narthex if you are interested.

VBS Snacks: If you can provide snacks for about thirty people for one of the nights of VBS, please sign up in the narthex. Snack time is 7:30pm.

Spring Cleaning: Spring cleaning will be from June 6 until the end of the month. If you aren't able to be on the cleaning list or would like a particular job, please contact Gloria Zeltwanger (392-5985) as soon as possible.

After Church Social: If you would like to serve refreshments after worship, please sign up on the sheet in the narthex. It's up to you to decide what you want to serve (for example: cookies or rolls or donuts, etc; coffee or juice or water, etc.) and whether you want to serve in the narthex or in the basement. You might want to sign up with a friend and divide the work (one providing the food and another serving it; or both sharing in providing and serving). It's all meant to be light and informal, a time to relax.

The freewill offering will go New Beginnings - A Home for Mothers with supplemental funds requested from Thrivent. New Beginnings is a Christ-centered home for single mothers and is affiliated with Christian Life Resources and the WELS.
