The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 10, 2008

Prayer:

Into temptation lead us not.

When evil foes against us plot

And vex our souls on ev'ry hand,

Oh, give us strength that we may stand

Firm in the faith, a mighty host,

Through comfort of the Holy Ghost.

(CW 410:7)

1 Corinthians 10;12, 13

Dear Father, Give Us the Strength to Resist Temptation

  1. Open our eyes to see what a clear and present danger temptation is
    1. What temptations surround us?
    2. Describe the role our flesh, the world, and Satan have in tempting us.
  2. Strengthen us to bear up as we watch and pray
    1. What strength comes form knowing that God is faithful?
    2. What does it mean to watch and pray?

1 Corinthian 10:12, 13 -- So let the one who thinks he stands firm watch out, lest he fall. No temptation has come upon you except the human kind. God is faithful, he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you're able, but along with the temptation he will make the way out, that is, the ability to bear up.
