The First Sunday in Advent

November 30, 2008

Prayer:

Redeemer, come! I open wide

My heart to you; here, Lord, abide!

Oh, enter with your saving grace;

Show me your kind and friendly face.

Your Holy Spirit guide us on

Until our glorious goal is won.

Eternal praise and fame

We offer to your name. (CW 3:1)

The First Sunday in Advent

November 30, 2008

Focus: Watch for Jesus

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 9, 2, 29, 8:1

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 63:16b, 17; 64:1-8

We pray for our Lord's return. For although our sins condemn us, our Redeemer is greater than our sins. He returns to bring us to our Father's house.

Psalm 24, p. 73

Lift up your heads in watchful anticipation, for your King comes.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9

We confidently watch for Jesus' return. For through the testimony of his Word, Jesus will keep us strong and present us as blameless before his Father.

Gospel: Mark 13:32-37

Always watch for Jesus, since you do not know when he will return.

Mark 13:32-37

Watch Continuously

  1. Always keep your eyes on Jesus
    1. Describe the attitude that keeps its eyes on Jesus.
    2. Why watch for Jesus?
    3. How do we keep our eyes on Jesus?
  2. Always be alert for works of service
    1. Why does our sinful flesh need the warning to always be alert?

News & Notes

Food shelf: If you would like to bring an item for the local food shelf, please place it in the box in the narthex today or tomorrow. We will take the boxes to the food shelf early this week

Advent Fellowship: Starting next Sunday, the Ladies' Society will serve coffee and refreshments before the service from 9:45am to 10:15am. Come and enjoy the friendship of your fellow Christians.

Carol Service: Mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 17, for our annual Christian carol service. Ring in the Christmas season as we join our voices in singing some of our best loved carols in praise to our Savior, the newborn King. Refreshments will be served afterwards.

Card night: Everyone is invited to an evening of fun and friendship tonight here at St. John's. The card game is easy for anyone to learn and it's an opportunity to get to know your church family better. You're welcome to bring along visitors as well. Mona and Kerry Roth will be hosting and providing drinks. Everyone is asked to bring a “snacky” item to share with others that night.

Christian Music CD: Chris Driesbach, who shared his music with us this summer, has a new CD out. We have nine copies in the narthex. Please check out the display.

Advent Worship: St. Paul's of Morris invites you to join them for Advent worship this Wednesday at 7:00pm. The theme of the service is “Advent Candles Burning Brightly.” Come and escape the frenzy of the season as we take time remembering the coming of our Savior.
