The Second Sunday in Advent

December 7, 2008

O Jesus Christ,

Your manger is

My paradise where my soul is reclining.

For there, O Lord,

We find the Word

Made flesh for us your grace is brightly shining.

(CW 40:1)

The Second Sunday in Advent

December 7, 2008

Focus: Prepare your heart

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 4:1-4, 16, 11 & 32, 4:5

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 40:1-11

Through his enduring Word our God prepares our hearts, so that we have comfort and forgiveness in Jesus, our Shepherd.

Psalm 85, p. 97

The Lord's unfailing love forgives our sins and grants salvation.

Second Lesson: 2 Peter 3:8-14

Our merciful Lord desires to work repentance in our hearts and the hearts of others before it is too late. So count on his promises.

Gospel: Mark 1:1-8

John's preaching and baptizing prepares the way for Jesus.

Mark 1:1-8

Only Repentance
Properly Prepares Our Hearts

  1. John's preaching calls us to confess our sins
    1. What kind of preaching leads to confession?
    2. How does John's clothing and lifestyle convict us of our sinfulness?
  2. John's preaching points us to our powerful Savior
    1. What did the powerful Savior do?
    2. What did he do for you in Baptism?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

Prayers: We pray for Harlow Thielke, the son of Eyvonne, who is undergoing surgery, and we pray for Gloria Zeltwanger who is hospitalized.

Financial Note: At the end of November $8583.50 had been given toward our WELS mission commitment of $10,000. $1416.50 is still needed. As of December 5 the General Fund was -$400.00 in the hole. As we remember what our Lord has given us, his love moves us to give.

December ushers: Chuck Nelson (capt.), Josh Nelson, Kyle Roth, Sam Roth, Ryan Schroeder

December cleaners: Doug & Leah Nelson; Burdette & Pearl Kraft
