The Epiphany of our Lord

January 4, 2009

Hail, O all-inviting Savior!

Gentiles now their off'rings bring,

In your temples seek your favor,

Jesus Christ, our Lord and King.

May we, body, soul, and spirit,

Live devoted to your praise,

Glorious realms of bless inherit,

Grateful anthems ever raise. (CW 87:1)

The Epiphany of our Lord

January 4, 2009

Focus: Jesus is the Light of the world

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 80, 79, 83, 577:1, 2

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 60:1-6

Jesus shines out into the darkness of this world to draw people from all nations to himself.

Psalm 72, p. 93

Jesus reigns as King over all

Second Lesson: Ephesians 3:2-12

God administers his grace so that the Good News of Jesus goes into all the world. Through faith alone we become joint heirs, who share in the promise of Jesus.

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

The Magi, foreigners, came to worship Jesus. For he came to be the Savior for all people.

Ephesians 3:2-12

What A Mystery:
The Gospel of Jesus Is Even for Me!

  1. Even we Gentiles have equal access to God through faith in Jesus
    1. Why was it so hard to understand that the Gentile Christians had equal status with the Jewish Christians?
    2. How do we realize how amazing this open access to God is?
  2. Even we Gentiles are able to make known the unsearchable riches of Christ
    1. How did God's grace use Paul in his divine plans?
    2. What riches of Christ do you know and so can share?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

News & Notes

Nominations: Doug Nelson and Don Spencer have been nominated as candidates for chairman.

Budget: We give thanks to our gracious Lord that he moved your hearts to generously give, so that we met our mission goal of $10,000 and had a positive balance in the General Fund at the end of the year.

May he continue to bless you and move you to cheerfully support his kingdom work in 2009. How rich his love is!

Installation: St. Paul's of Morris invites us to join them in a service of thanks as their new pastor, the Reverend Donald Main, is installed on January 11 at 4:00pm. A potluck will follow the service.

Annual Meeting: The annual meeting will be held on January 11 at about 12:30pm following the annual potluck. The agenda includes election for chairman, salaries for 2009, and changes in the bylaws reducing the number of elders and trustees from three to two each. These changes are posted in the narthex. The ladies and children will have the Bingo party during this time.
