The First Sunday after Epiphany

January 11, 2009

With one accord, O God, we pray:

Grant us your Holy Spirit.

Help us in our infirmity

Through Jesus' blood and merit.

Grant us to grow in grace each day

That by this sacrament [Baptism] we may

Eternal life inherit. (CW 299:2)

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 49:1-6

The Father sent Jesus as a baby to bring salvation not only to the Jews but to the Gentiles as well. The light of his salvation shown into our hearts at our Baptism.

Psalm 2, p. 65

This world may plot, but Jesus reigns. Through Baptism he reigns in our hearts, bringing us his victory.

At Jesus' Baptism the Father's voice reveals that Jesus is true God. Jesus' Baptism also marks him as our Savior, who came to take our place, even being baptized like us although he was sinless.

News & Notes

Nominations: Doug Nelson and Don Spencer have been nominated as candidates for chairman.

Budget: We give thanks to our gracious Lord that he moved your hearts to generously give, so that we met our mission goal of $10,000 and had a positive balance in the General Fund at the end of the year.

May he continue to bless you and move you to cheerfully support his kingdom work in 2009. How rich his love is!

Installation: St. Paul's of Morris invites us to join them in a service of thanks as their new pastor, the Reverend Donald Main, is installed today at 4:00pm. A potluck will follow the service.

Annual Meeting: The annual meeting will be held today at about 12:30pm following the annual potluck. The agenda includes election for chairman, salaries for 2009, and changes in the bylaws reducing the number of elders and trustees from three to two each and also allowing council members to succeed themselves once. These changes are posted in the narthex. The ladies and children will have the Bingo party during this time.
