The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

February 8, 2009

Prayer:

Lord, speak to us that we may speak

In living echoes of your tone.

As you have sought, so let us seek

Your straying children, lost and lone.

(CW 561:1)

The Fifth Sunday after Epiphany

February 8, 2009

Focus: Jesus heals the diseases of body and soul

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 227, 93, 577, 492

God's Word

First Lesson: Job 7:1-7

Life on this earth can be such a misery. Only in Jesus do we find true comfort. He gives the strength to bear up and one day will safely bring you home to heaven.

Psalm 103, p. 105

Jesus heals our souls by forgiving our sins.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23

Let us do all we can to spread the Gospel so that others find true healing in Jesus and are saved.

Gospel: Mark 1:29-39

We see Jesus' power and love as he heals people's bodies with his miracles and as he heals their souls by preaching the Good News.

1 Corinthians 9:16-23

I Give Up My Rights
in order to Gain Others for Christ

  1. Giving the gift of the Gospel
    1. Why is it hard to give the gift of the Gospel?
    2. Why did Paul preach the Gospel?
    3. What gives us the power to keep on giving away the gift of the Gospel?
  2. Serving others where they're at
    1. How did Paul give up his rights to meet others where they're at?
    2. How can you serve all in order to gain some for Christ?

Prayers: We give thanks to our God for blessing Justin and Carrie Flaten with a healthy baby daughter, Haylee Flaten. We ask our Lord to care for Irv Jacobsen who has been in the hospital. We ask him also to watch over Les Staples as he undergoes hip surgery this week.
