The Second Sunday in Lent

March 8, 2009

Prayer:

Jesus, priceless treasure,

Fount of purest pleasure,

Truest friend to me.

Ah, how long in anguish

Shall my spirit languish,

Yearning, Lord, for thee?

Thou art mine,

O Lamb divine!

I will suffer naught to hide thee,

Naught I ask beside thee.

The Second Sunday in Lent

March 8, 2009

Focus: Only Jesus saves

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 111, 434, 358, 579

God's Word

First Lesson: Genesis 28:10-17

Jacob saw a stairway reaching to heaven. We can't buy a stairway to heaven. Jesus alone is the way. For only Jesus saves. He alone brings us to heaven.

Psalm 73, p. 94 - Jesus saves us for our heavenly home.

Second Lesson: Romans 5:1-11

Look at what Jesus did to save us while we were still his enemies. Now that you are reconciled through Christ and have peace with God through faith in his justification, won't he keep you safe for eternity? So why worry, trust your Savior always.

Gospel: Mark 8:31-38

Only Jesus saves, so follow him alone, no matter what the difficulties of life.

3 John 1-8

We Work Together
for the sake of Jesus' Name

  1. Walking together in the truth
    1. How was church life different in John's day?
    2. What is the truth?
    3. How do we walk together in the truth of Jesus' name?
  2. Walking together in love
    1. What did Gaius' love do?
    2. How do we work together in love to support the truth?
