The Third Sunday in Lent

March 15, 2009

Your cross, not mine, O Christ,

Has borne the dreadful load

Of sins that none cold bear

But the incarnate God.

To whom but you, who can alone

For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?

The Third Sunday in Lent

March 15, 2009

Focus: God is serious

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 226, 456, 128, 401

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 20:1-17

God is serious about his commandments. We are to love and honor him, his name, and his word above all. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves. God is serious about our obedience.

Psalm 19, p. 70

Bless our meditation on your word, O Lord.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25

God is serious about saving you. So serious that he gave his Son, Christ crucified.

Gospel: John 2:13-22

See how serious Jesus is about carrying out his saving work, as zeal for his Father's house fills him.

John 2:13-22

“Destroy This Temple,
and I Will Raise It Again in Three Days”

  1. What's the relation between the temple and Jesus' body?
  2. How is Jesus' death and resurrection connected to the temple?
  3. What does this mean for us?
