The Third Sunday of Easter
Confirmation Sunday

April 26, 2009

Our Lord and God, oh, bless this day

And hear us, we implore you;

None of your children turn away

Who now appear before you.

We come before your face

And pray: let your rich grace

Descend from heav'n above

In all your wondrous love,

And keep us by your Spirit.

Focus: Faith's foundation

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 599, 160, 528, 597

God's Word

First Lesson: Acts 4:8-12

With his faith founded on Jesus, Peter boldly confesses that Jesus alone is the Savior for sinners.

Psalm 118, p. 108

Alone Jesus is the strong, sure, saving foundation. He is the cornerstone and the capstone. Lean on him.

Second Lesson: 1 John 1:1-2:2

Faith is built on the message proclaimed to us through the Apostles, who heard, saw, and touched Jesus. In Jesus' blood we are purified from our sins, for he alone is the atoning sacrifice for all the sins of the whole world. In him we have fellowship with God.

Gospel: Luke 24:36-49

Faith is convinced that Jesus has risen, just as the Scriptures (Moses, the Prohets, and the Psalms) had foretold. Faith proclaims this Good News to bring repentance and forgiveness to others.

Acts 4:8-12

Stand Firm on the Cornerstone

  1. In the face of the world's opposition
    1. Give several examples of how the world tries to lure you off the Cornerstone.
  2. By the power of his resurrection that alone saves
    1. How did God prove that Jesus is the Cornerstone?
    2. How does Jesus give you the power to stand firm on him?

Confirmation: Today in the Rite of Confirmation, four students: Rachel Gray, Courtney Greiner, Evan Nelson, Seth Nelson, confess their faith in their Savior, Jesus, and promise to follow him all their lives. May our gracious Good Shepherd always keep them close to himself.

We sent in $2,273.75 to the WELS towards our annual mission goal of $10,000. The trustees had the water softener in the parsonage replaced, since the old one stopped working. They also will be working on several projects around the church including: exterior painting, repairing exterior baseline plaster, repainting outside cross, repairing weather stripping on outside sacristy door, landscaping the front shrubbery of the church.

New Business: The voters authorized the council to replace windows and/or doors in the parsonage as funding becomes available.

An outdoor service will be planned with St. Paul's of Morris, depending on when the parks available. Update: Of the dates suggested Pomme de Terre Park was only available on June 21 (our last choice since it was Father's Day). So the outdoor service will be at 10:30, June 21, followed by a potluck.

The Summer schedule was set with Sunday morning service at 9:00am and Wednesday night service at 7:00pm, beginning May 24. The Wednesday night service will be the same as the previous Sunday.

Renewal of Meditations was set for 18 copies at $10.60 per annual subscription.

Vacation Bible School was set for May 31-June 4 (Sun. - Thurs.) for 6:30-8:30pm.

The next quarterly meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 12 after service. Next Council Meeting will be May 11, 2008, at 8:00pm with the Elders meeting at 7:00pm.

We closed with the Lord's Prayer.
