The Fourth Sunday of Easter

May 3, 2009

Oh, ever be our guide,

Our shepherd and our pride,

Our staff and song.

Jesus, O Christ of God,

By your enduring Word

Lead us where you have trod;

Make our faith strong. (CW 515:4)

God's Word

First Lesson: Acts 4:23-33

The Apostles turn to God the Father and their Shepherd, Jesus Christ, for the courage to boldly keep on proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus.

Psalm 23, p. 72

We follow our Good Shepherd through all as he leads us to the victory celebration in our Father's house.

Second Lesson: 1 John 3:1, 2

Our Good Shepherd has called us to be children of God, and what greater things await us as we follow him!

Gospel: John 10:11-18

Jesus describes his work as the Good Shepherd. He gave his life for you,his sheep, and he has taken up his life again. He is the living Shepherd.

Acts 4:23-33

Our God Rules Victoriously

  1. Know that all is under his power
    1. How did our Creator direct history for our salvation?
  2. Believe it despite the present evidence
    1. What does the visible evidence in life point to?
    2. Where must faith look to be sure of the victory?
  3. Confess it in words and actions
    1. Describe the words and actions that flow from faith.

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
