The Festival of Pentecost:
The Coming of the Holy Spirit

May 31, 2009

Prayer:

O Holy Spirit, grant us grace

That we our Lord and Savior

In faith and fervent love embrace

And truly serve him ever,

So that when death is near at hand

We at his cross may firmly stand

And there find our salvation.

(CW 185:1)

The Festival of Pentecost:
The Coming of the Holy Spirit

May 31, 2009

Focus: Come, O Holy Spirit, to show us Jesus

Order of Worship: Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 184, 176, 34 (LAPPY), 185

God's Word

First Lesson: Ezekiel 37:1-14

With this vision of dry bones, the Lord visualizes for Ezekiel and us that the Holy Spirit brings life to those dead in sin. He brings life through the Word. Hear the word of the Lord!

Psalm 51b, p. 87

The Holy Spirit works repentance in our hearts and brings us the joy of salvation.

Second Lesson: Acts 2:1-21

From Pentecost onward the Holy Spirit has been working to bring the Good News of Jesus to all nations.

Gospel: John 14:25-27

Jesus promises the Holy Spirit and the peace he brings.

John 14:25-27

Pentecost's Divine Gifts

  1. The Holy Spirit, who teaches us Jesus' name
    1. How do the great miracles the Holy Spirit worked at Pentecost contrast with 'modern' spirituality?
    2. What work does the Holy Spirit still do among us today?
  2. Peace, which comforts our hearts
    1. What kind of peace does Jesus leave for us?
    2. How does Jesus bring his peace to us?

High School Graduate: Today we recognize the 2009 high school graduate from St. John's, Josh Nelson. May our Savior continue to bless him through his word.
