The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 9, 2009

Savior, I follow on, Guided by thee,

Seeing not yet the hand That leadeth me.

Hushed be my heart and still;

Fear I no further ill.

Only to meet they will

My will shall be. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 473:1)

The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 9, 2009

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 243, 349, 473, 355

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 24:3-11

Through the blood of the covenant the elders of Israel ate before God. Through the blood of Jesus Christ we rejoice in the glorious presence of our God forever.

Psalm 84, p. 96

What a blessing Jesus has purchased for us! That we can worship in God's house without fear and anticipate worshiping him in his presence forever.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-16

Through Jesus we have the blessing of living for him, the blessing of love and unity, the blessing of pastors and teachers, the blessing of growing up into Christ, our Head.

Gospel: John 6:1-15

Through Jesus the disciples and people are blessed spiritually and physically.

John 6:1-15

  1. He places the impossible in front of us
    1. What impossible situation did the disciples face?
    2. What impossible things has Jesus placed before you?
    3. Why does Jesus place the impossible before us?
  2. He works it out his way, not mine
    1. When we realize we can't do the impossible, what do we pray?
    2. Describe the blessing Jesus brings as he works his way in you.
