The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

August 16, 2009

In faith, Lord, let me serve you;

Though persecution, grief and pain

Should seek to overwhelm me,

Let me a steadfast trust retain.

And then at my departure,

Lord, take me home to you,

And there inherit,

All you have promised me. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 403:3)

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 16:2-15

Just as God took care of his people of Israel, so also he cares for us as we travel through the wilderness of this life following Jesus in faith.

Psalm 145, p. 119

Praise our Lord for taking care of us.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 4:17-24

Faith follows Jesus, putting off the old self and putting on the new, created like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Gospel: John 6:24-35

Jesus directs us away from earthly food and human works. He directs us to himself, the living bread. As we follow him, our faith feeds on him. He alone fills our hungry souls.

Matthew 10:34-42
