The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 6, 2009

O Lord, we praise you, bless you, and adore you,

In thanksgiving bow before you.

Here with your body and your blood you nourish

Our weak souls that they may flourish.

O Lord, have mercy! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 317:1)

God's Word

Joshua sets the example for Israel and for us as he declares, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Psalm 71, p. 92

Serve the Lord by passing on his Good News from generation to generation

Second Lesson: Ephesians 5:21-31

Serve the Lord in your family as you carry out the roles the Lord gives you as the wife or as the husband.

Gospel: John 6:60-69

Serve the Lord in your family as you keep on following Jesus, no matter what others do. For only Jesus has the words of eternal life.

Joshua 24:1, 2a, 14-18

Everyone serves a god -- Will you:

  1. Serve gods from your past;
  2. Serve gods from your future;
  3. Serve the Living God who has saved you?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
