The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 13, 2009

Prayer:

Lord, open now my heart to hear,

And through your Word to me draw near.

Let me your Word e'er pure retain;

Let me your child and heir remain. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 282:1)

The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 13, 2009

Worship Focus: God's Word is our strength

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 283, 282, 279, 331

God's Word

First Lesson: Deuteronomy 4:1, 2, 6-8

Moses addresses the Israelites before they enter the land of Canaan. Through these words the Holy Spirit still speaks to us, urging us to hear God's word without changing it and to put it into practice in our lives. For his word is our strength.

Psalm 119c, p. 111

God's word brings true wisdom and guidance. Like honey it strengthens us.

Second Lesson: Ephesians 6:10-20

Put on the full armor of God in the battle against the spiritual forces of evil, and don't forget the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14, 15, 21-23

Jesus rebukes the Pharisees for adding their man-made rules to God's word and taking away what the word really said about our hearts. For only after God's commandments confront the sin within us can the Good News of forgiveness in Jesus strengthen us.

Deuteronomy 4:1, 2, 6-8

Guard God's Flawless Word

  1. By seeking your God in it
    1. Why are we to seek God only in his word?
  2. By clinging to it for life
    1. Why can you be sure God's promises won't fail?
  3. By drawing others to its wisdom
    1. How does guarding God's word in our hearts draw others to him?

Sunday Bible Study: As we study Revelation, we see God's wonderful comfort and the strength he gives us despite the opposition of the world.

Wednesday Bible Study: What's the difference between the power of the church and the power of the state? How does our world confuse them? How are we to keep them distinct? Come find answers to these questions Wednesday night at 7:00pm as we look at the last part of the Augsburg Confession of the Lutheran Church.

Council / Voters' Minutes: In going through the church records, we are missing the minute book for the council and voters' meetings for the years 1958-1981. If anyone might know where it may be, please tell Pastor Bitter.

Fall Festival: Great Plains Lutheran High School in Watertown, SD, is hosting a fall festival on September 27 from 3 to 6pm. An afternoon of fundraising, food, fellowship & fun at GPLHS -- plan to come and bring some friends. Check out auction items on the web: gplhs.org after Wednesday, 9/16. If you have an item to donate to the auction, wish to offer your musical talents, or assist with food -- decorate a cake and/or provide pasta salad, it will be helpful for planning if you let the school know. Call: 605-886-0672 or email: ericmartens@ymail.com or geigerg@gplhs.org.

Pictorial Directory: It's been ten years since the congregation had a pictorial directory for the centennial celebration. If we want to have one next year (2010), we need to start planning now. The council wanted to guage the interest in the congregation before the voters make a decision on October 11. Usually the cost for the company to come and take pictures is nothing and each family that participates gets a free directory and maybe a free 8x10. The company makes its money by selling the members additional pictures and selling the congregation other items. The exact details will depend on what company we would choose. So please fill out the survey below and return it to the basket in the back of the church.
