The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 27, 2009

Lord, keep us steadfast in your Word;

Curb those who by deceit or sword

Would seek to overthrow your Son

And to destroy what he has done. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 203:1)

The Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 27, 2009

Worship Focus: In the Lord serve others

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 486, 541, 203, 293

God's Word

First Lesson: Jeremiah 11:18-20

Serving others does not mean surrendering God's truth to them, but we leave them to the Lord's justice rather than taking personal revenge.

Psalm 31, p. 77

We serve others knowing that the Lord takes care of us in life and in death.

Second Lesson: James 3:13-18

What heavenly wisdom to know Jesus and humbly serve others setting aside selfish ambition!

Gospel: Mark 9:30-37

Like a little child, faith trusts Jesus completely. In faith we trust that Jesus has died for us and risen, just as he promised. Such faith that believes all that Jesus has done for us humbly serves others, placing them be ourselves.

Jeremiah 11:18-20

O Lord, Stop All Those
Who Oppose the Truth

  1. They work against God's truth from within
    1. Describe Jeremiah's times.
    2. How does Christian love treat those who wrong us?
    3. What justly incites righteous anger in us?
  2. Retribution belongs to the Lord
    1. Why can we confidently entrust retribution into the Lord's hands?
    2. Why is this prayer so important?
