The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 4, 2009

Prayer:

Triune God, oh, be our stay

And let us perish never!

Cleanse us from our sins, we pray,

And grant us life forever.

Keep us from the evil one;

Uphold our faith most holy;

Grant us to trust you solely

With humble hearts and lowly. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 192:1)

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

God's Word

First Lesson: Number 11:16, 24-29

The Holy Spirit proclaimed his word through the elders in Israel.

Psalm 51b, p. 87

Through his Word the Holy Spirit purifies our hearts.

Second Lesson: James 4:7-12

Through the Word, the Holy Spirit changes our inner attitude toward God and our outward actions toward others.

Gospel: Mark 9:38-50

As God's Word works like salt in us to purify and preserve us for eternal life, our attitude toward others changes, and we take action to keep ourselves from falling into sin.

Mark 9:38-50

Cut Away the Death Traps

  1. By fighting party pride that looks down on others
    1. How did the sin of party pride show in the disciples?
    2. How could Jesus' words, “Whoever is not against us is for us,” be misused?
    3. What attitude and actions are we to show toward those who haven't joined with us?
  2. By fighting what draws your heart into sin
    1. What death traps are trying to kill your faith?
  3. As God's Word salts you
    1. How can you stay salty?

Prayers: We include in our prayers today, Bonnie Bailey, the sister-in-law of Gloria Zeltwanger. We ask our Lord to watch over Bonnie during surgery and help her through recovery.

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
