The First Sunday in Advent

November 29, 2009

Come, O precious Ransom, come,

Only Hope for sinful mortals!

Come, O Savior of the world!

Open are to you all portals.

Come, your beauty let us view;

Anxiously we wait for you. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 208:4)

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

God's Word

First Lesson: Jeremiah 33:14-16

Jesus is coming! He is the Lord our righteousness. For he will ransom us.

Psalm 25, p. 74

The Lord remembers his great mercy and love and sends our Redeemer.

Second Lesson: 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

Jesus' love for us moves us to overflow in love to others. For he came to ransom us while we were still his enemies. He will come again to present his people as blameless before God, for by faith in him we are clothed with his righteousness.

Gospel: Luke 21:25-36

When Jesus returns in his glory, be watching and ready, so that you can lift up your head, knowing that your redemption is drawing near.

Luke 21:25-36

Watch with Eager Expectation

  1. Seeing the signs of a failing world
    1. What earthly things are you eager for you?
    2. What will happen to all earthly things?
    3. What weighs down our hearts when we see that the things of this world fail?
  2. Waiting for your Redeemer
    1. Where alone do we find lasting stability?
    2. What does God's word answer when we, as beggars, call out in prayer?
    3. How do we change as wait for our Redeemer?

News & Notes

Bible Class: How sinful are we? Can we make our sinfulness sound worse than it is? What do we mean when we talk about original sin? These are important questions, for how we view sin affects how we view our Savior. Our Lutheran confessions address these questions. Join us Wednesday night as we begin the first article of the Formula of Concord. We'll see how our Lutheran forefathers used Scripture to answer these questions about sin.

Christian Carol Service: Mark your calendars for Wednesday, December 16, at 7:00pm. Join us in a sing-a-long of some of your favorite Christian Christmas carols. You'll have many to choose from. Invite others to come with you. It's open for all. Refreshment will be served afterward.

Christmas Eve and Day: Please note the service times for Christmas Eve at 6:30pm and Christmas Day at 10:00am

November ushers: Kevin Zeltwanger (capt.), Justin Flaten, David Osterman, Chad Rohloff, Dean Rohloff

November cleaners: Dick & Judy Lubenow, Tom & Elaine Mohr
