The First Sunday in Lent

February 21, 2010

Prayer:

Jesus, Sun of life, my Splendor,

Jesus, Friend of friends most tender,

Jesus, Joy of my desiring,

Fount of life, my soul inspiring

At your feet I cry, my Maker:

Let me be a fit partaker

Of this blessed food from heaven

For our good, your glory, given. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 311:7)

God's Word

First Lesson: Joshua 7:16-26

After the battle of Jericho, the Israelites were defeated by the men of Ai. Why? Someone had fallen to temptation taking what was forbidden. So the Lord tells Joshua how to find the guilty person and what the punishment is. We hear how Joshua carried out the Lord's command.

Psalm 91, p. 100

Trust in the Lord for security, not in earthly riches.

Second Lesson: Hebrews 4:14-16

Jesus knows what it means to face temptation. So go to him confident of his mercy. He is your faithful High Priest.

Gospel: Luke 4:1-13

Our Savior Jesus defeated temptation for us.

Joshua 7:16-26

  2. Jesus is greater than our greed
    1. Why is Jesus' victory over greed in the wilderness Good News for you?
    2. What leads us to confess our greed?
    3. Describe your priceless Treasure.

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
