The Third Sunday in Lent

March 7, 2010

Prayer:

Today your mercy calls us

To wash away our sin.

However great our trespass,

Whatever we have been,

However long from mercy

Our hearts have turned away,

Your precious blood can wash us

And make us clean today. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 339:1)

The Third Sunday in Lent

God's Word

First Lesson: Exodus 3:1-8, 10-15

The Lord called Moses to deliver his people. Jesus has delivered us from the power of sin and death. Live each day in repentance that trusts only in Jesus for forgiveness.

Psalm 38, p. 81

We call out confessing our sins, trusting in God's forgiveness in Christ.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians10:1-13

Learn from Israel's history to walk with repentant hearts before our Lord.

Gospel: Luke 13:1-9

Tragedies remind us that our time on earth is short before we face the judgment. So live each day in repentance that confess the terror of our sin and rejoices in the forgiveness Jesus has purchased for us.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

Divine Lessons From Israel's History

  1. Christ lavishes his spiritual blessings on all of us
    1. What blessings does Baptism lavish on us?
    2. What further blessings did he give for the Israelites in the wilderness and for us?
  2. Don't arrogantly abuse his goodness
    1. How did the Israelites show their sinful arrogance?
    2. When do you fall into the deadly sin of thinking you know better than God?
  3. Only his faithfulness sustains us
    1. How does he sustain us so that we battle on against temptation?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with us. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
