The Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 14, 2010

Prayer:

With broken heart and contrite sigh,

A trembling sinner, Lord, I cry.

Your pard'ning grace is rich and free --

O God, be merciful to me! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 303:1)

The Fourth Sunday in Lent

March 14, 2010

Worship Focus: The Father's Welcome Turns Tears to Joy

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 71(LAPPY), 304, 428, 111

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 12:1-6

The Lord has saved us from the depths of our sin. So we burst forth in joy, praising his name.

Psalm 30, p. 76

The Lord's forgiveness turns our sadness into gladness as we anticipate the eternal joy of heaven

Second Lesson: James 4:7-10

James calls on us to submit to God so that he can lift us up in joy.

Gospel: Luke 15:1-3,11-32

Jesus illustrates the welcoming love of the Father. As we humbly fall on his mercy, he embraces us with his forgiveness in Christ. Be careful that you do not reject the Father's love, imagining that you have earned it.

James 4:7-10

Submit to God, For He Lifts Up the Lowly

  1. The devil will flee
    1. How do we stand alongside God in our battle against the devil?
    2. What confidence do you have as you stand with God, submitting to his Word?
  2. Your hearts will be clean
    1. What separates us from God?
    2. How do we react when we see the terror of our sin and our miserable helplessness?
    3. What promise dispels this gloom?

Ladies' Society: The Ladies' Society meeting on March 10 began by discovering water on the kitchen floor. After cleaning up the spring thaw, we continued with a Bible study on the 4th Commandment. Seven members were present to discuss redoing the flower arrangements and the new banners. They voted to give $10 instead of $5 as a memorial when a member of St. John's passes away. Lilies and palms for Palm Sunday and Easter were discussed. Next months meeting will be at Skyview Plaza. We adjourned with prayer and had cake.

Today's Devotions: God tells us: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Another opportunity for us to grow spiritually is to use Today’s Devotion that are provided by www.whataboutjesus.com and www.wels.net. These devotions are written by WELS pastors and appear every weekday. Devotions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are based on the Scripture readings (Old Testament, Epistle and Gospel) that were used in many of our churches the previous Sunday. Every Tuesday and Thursday, there is a continuing series of devotions based on a chapter by chapter study of a book of the Bible—presently we are studying the Gospel of Matthew. A podcast of every devotion is also included. To make it easy to access the devotion every day, subscribe to have them delivered to you by email. Simply go to www.wels.net/subscribe and sign up.

Thrivent: March 15 at 6:00 at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris there will be an informational meeting for Thrivent.
