The Third Sunday of Easter

April 18, 2010

Prayer:

Grant me grace, O blessed Savior,

And your Holy Spirit send

That my life and my behavior

May be pleasing to the end,

That I may not fall again

Into death's grim pit and pain,

Whence by grace you have retrieved me

And from which you have relieved me.

(Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 147:4)

The Third Sunday of Easter

April 18, 2010

Worship Focus:
The risen Jesus blesses the mission he gives us

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 162, 160, 165, 152:4, 6

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Acts 9:1-19a

Jesus called Saul, a. k. a. the Apostle Paul, from a life of persecuting Christians to a life of service. Despite what you've been, how can Jesus use you to spread his word?

Psalm 67, p. 91

Make known God's saving ways.

Second Lesson: Revelation 5:11-14

Spread the Good News, so that many more join the angels in singing: “Worthy is the Lamb . . .”

Gospel: John 21:1-14

The risen Jesus appears to his disciples near the Sea of Galilee.

John 21:1-14

The Risen Jesus Even Sends Out Screw-ups

  1. A night of waiting
    1. If you were one of the disciples waiting for Jesus, what might have been going through your mind?
  2. A repeated miracle
    1. What message would this catch of fish bring home to the disciples?
    2. How have we screwed up?
    3. What does Jesus say to you to remove your guilt?
    4. What does he send you out to do?
  3. A promise and blessing
    1. What promise comes attached to God's Word?
    2. Why are we spurred on to do our best, even though Jesus uses screw-ups?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

Lutheran Women's Missionary Society: The LWMS Crow River Circuit 2010 Spring Rally is from 11am to 3pm on April 24 at St. Paul, 301 W. 5th St., Morris. Pastor Joe Johnson or his wife Valerie from True North Campus Ministries will be the guest speaker.

The LWMS Crow River Circuit is still looking for nominees for circuit secretary. If you might be interested or would like more information, please talk to Gloria Zeltwanger or Pastor Bitter.

Offering: St. John's General Fund needs about $6,000/month or about $1,400/week (including 5th Sundays) to cover operating expenses. To meet our $10,000 commitment to synod by the end of the year, our mission offering from April to December needs to be about $940/month or about $220/week. Please keep our congregation in your prayers and in your financial plans as you remember the blessings our Lord showers on us.

Wednesday Bible Class: Righteousness is the key to our salvation. But what is the righteousness that makes us right before God? The answer is the central truth of Christianity. Come, hear our Lutheran forefathers proclaim Scripture's answer in the Formula of Concord.

Notes from the Voter's Meeting:

The meeting opened with prayer. There was roll call and the minutes were read.

Under membership the death of Alan Tonn on March 12, 2010, was reported. The Voters released Pam Roseth, Brandy Roseth, and Danielle Laine from membership since they have moved out of town and have not contacted our congregation for several years.

The church photo directory pictures are scheduled for July 7 & 8 from 4:00-9:00p.m. More information will become available as the time approaches.

Reports: Pastor's report is available in the narthex.

The Treasurer reported that the General Fund had an ending balance of $908 on March 31 and that $1,555 had been given to missions in the 1st Quarter.

The Trustees reported that David Paul will be painting the cross. They are looking into replacing some of the front shubbery and repairing the plaster/concrete along the outside of the church by the basement windows. The parsonage gutters will be replaced, since some were damaged by ice/snow this Spring.

New Business: The Voters authorized the council to chose a delegate for the WELS MN District Convention, June 15-17, if a willing volunteer is found.

Our joint outdoor worship service with St. Paul's of Morris will be July 11.

After considering the surveys (about forty were returned -- thank you for your participation), the Voters set the summer service time at 9:00am Sundays and 7:00pm Wednesdays. These times will be different if Pastor Bitter is gone and Pastor Main is preaching.

The 18 yearly subscriptions to Meditations were renewed for $190.80.

VBS is tentatively scheduled for the first full week of June. Pastor will work out the details with those involved.

The next quarterly meeting is tentatively scheduled for July 18 after church. Council will meet May 10, 2010 at 8:00pm. Elders will meet at 7:00pm.
