Pentecost: The Coming of the Holy Spirit
May 23, 2010
Holy Spirit, Light divine
Shine upon this heart of mine;
Chase the gloom of night away;
Turn the darkness into day. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 183:1)
Worship Focus: The Holy Spirit changes us
Order of Worship: Divine Service II (see handout), p. 15
Hymns: 184, 176, 478, 183
First Lesson: Genesis 11:1-9
At Babel we see God's judgment against human pride. But today his word of grace crosses the language barrier for the Holy Spirit to bring the Good News of Jesus into the hearts of many.
Psalm 51b, p. 87
By your Spirit create in us pure hearts, O God!
Second Lesson: Acts 2:1-21
The opening events of Pentecost and the first part of the Apostle Peter's sermon that day are recorded for us.
Gospel: John 15:26, 27
Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit as our Counselor and Comforter. He fulfills this promises as the Holy Spirit testifies about Jesus through the Word of God.
Schedule Change: Next week, May 30, we move to the summer schedule. Divine service is at 9:00am. Due to VBS there will be no Wednesday service that week. The first Wednesday service will be June 9 at 7:00pm. Be sure to watch the calander, since there may be other times the Wednesday service is cancelled if Pastor has to be out of town.
Vacation Bible School: Round up your friends and neighbors and bring them to the Circle J Ranch. Vacation Bible School this year will be from Tuesday, June 1, to Friday, June 4, from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, for ages 3 to those entering 6th grade.
We're looking for ranch hands to help with teaching, music, crafts, and activities. Please sign up on the sheet in the narthex if you're available for one or more days.
If you'd like to whip up some grub for the children to snack on, there's a sign up sheet as well.
Finally, if anyone has a ranch-related idea or a demonstration they could share on one of the nights, please talk to Pastor.
May ushers: Dick Smith (capt.), Justin Flaten, Dick Lubenow, Chad Rohloff, Sam Roth
