The Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 6, 2010

Holy Spirit, Pow'r divine,

Dwell within this heart of mine;

Cast down ev'ry idol throne;

Reign supreme and reign alone. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 183:4)

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

June 6, 2010

Worship Focus: Marvel at our God's power

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 235, 441, 377, LAPPY-63

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: 1 Kings 8:22, 23, 41-43

King Solomon prays at the dedication of the Lord's temple. The Lord's power and mercy shines out as he answers even the prayer of the foreigner. Remember God's mercy and power as you pray.

Psalm 100, p. 104

Our powerful God takes care of us, his sheep. Praise him!

Second Lesson: Galatians 1:1-10

Only the Gospel of Jesus Christ saves. Don't exchange it for anything else, no matter how pleasing or powerful that other “gospel” may sound.

Gospel: Luke 7:1-10

Jesus shows his healing power. Trust him, just as the centurion did. Trust him, even when his promises seem impossible.

Genesis 17:1-5

El Shaddai (אל שדי) Can Do Anything

  1. A name that can terrify
    1. How well have you met God's standard?
  2. A name that gives hope because of the covenant
    1. Describe what this covenant was all about.
    2. Why are you included in the covenant God made with Abraham?
  3. A name that strengths us to live for him
    1. How does the way we live change as we remember all that El Shaddai, אֵל שַׁדַּי, does for us?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

Wednesday Night Service: Divine worship will be at 7:00pm on June 9, 23. The service will be the same as the previous Sundays (June 6, 20).

News & Notes

Vacation Bible School: Thank you to all who helped. God blessed us with three teachers: Sam Roth, Christine Lubenow, Abigail Bitter; two music leaders: Leah Nelson, Phyllis Joos; one craft leader: Sandy Nelson; and one helper: Morgan Nelson. Thirteen children attended over the four days with a daily average of about ten. We pray that the Holy Spirit has strengthened the faith of all involved as he pointed us to Jesus, our great Savior and Shepherd.

Sign-up for pictures: It's time to sign-up to reserve your slot for the church directory. Every family that has a picture taken will get a complimentary directory and an 8x10. You also have the option to purchase more pictures. LifeTouch photographers will be here July 7 and 8 from 2:30-8:40pm. We need thirty-five families to sign up. The time sheet is on the table in the narthex.

Roster Corrections: Please make any necessary corrections or additions to the membership roster so that it will be accurate when included in the pictorial directory.

New Banners and Sermon Series: Each week as one of the new banners goes up, the sermon will focus on that special name for our God. Last week we started with Yahweh. Today we heard about El Shaddai. Two more are coming.
