The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

July 25, 2010

Your cross, not mine, O Christ,

Has borne the dreadful load

Of sins that none could bear

But the incarnate God.

To whom but you, who can alone

For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 401:3)

The Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

July 25, 2010

Worship Focus: God's Word Brings the Gospel

Order of Worship: The Common Service, 15

Hymns: 221, 290, 388, 393:1-3

God's Word

First Lesson: Genesis 18:1-14

God's Word brings us great promises. Don't dismiss them as impossible, as Sarah did. Rather believe what he says. Nothing is to hard for our God.

Psalm 119a, p. 109

How good to take to heart the word of our Lord!

Second Lesson: Colossians 1:21-29

God's Word makes known to us the mystery of Christ. He reconciled us to God by giving his own body into death on the cross. That's the Gospel that saves.

Gospel: Luke 10:38-42

Despite all the busyness of life, only one thing is needed. Don't neglect it; rather, cherish the Gospel.

Colossians 1:21-23

Christ Reconciled You to Present You as Holy

  1. How severe our alienation was!
  2. How costly his sacrifice!
  3. How vital to stand firm on the Gospel!

News & Notes

Quarterly Meeting Notes: The Second Quarter Voters' Meeting was held after service on July 25, 2010. It opened with prayer, roll call, and the reading of the minutes. The pastor's report is available in the narthex.

The Treasurer reported a serious short fall in the General Fund. Even after the offering from that morning, the General Fund was still over $2000 in debt. We also are behind in our mission commitment by over $1300. The voters' authorized the church council to send out a letter to all the members to inform them of the situation and encourage cheerful giving.

The Trustees have finished repairing the plaster that was coming off from the church foundation. The parsonage gutters had been replaced, and the cross above the entrance had been repainted.

The voters approved participating in the WELS/ELS 403b Shepherd Plan Solution since it was revenue neutral and offered tax advantages as a retirement savings plan for pastor.

The council will decide what to do about the church's safety deposit box.

The Fall schedule will begin September 12. Sunday school at 9:15. Bible Class and Youth Class at 9:30. Divine Service at 10:30.

The next quarterly voters' meeting is tentatively schedule for October 10 after service. The next regular council meeting is August 9 at 8:00pm with elders meeting at 7:00pm.

The meeting closed with the Lord's Prayer.
