The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 1, 2010

Lord, teach us how to pray aright,

With rev'rence and with fear.

Though dust and ashes in your sight,

We may, we must draw near. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 412:1)

The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 1, 2010

Worship Focus: Pray through faith in Jesus Christ

Order of Worship: Gathering Rite & The Common Service

Hymns: Gathering Rite, 410:1-4, 310, 332

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Genesis 18:20-32

Abraham's example illustrates a prayer of humbleness, confessing that I am nothing but dust and ashes, and of boldness, relying on the mercy and grace of the Lord to hear and answer.

Psalm 6, p. 66

With David we pray for mercy and deliverance.

Second Lesson: Colossians 2:6-15

We can pray only because of what Jesus has done for us. In Baptism we were buried with him, so what he did counts for us. He has nailed our sins to his cross, so that we may approach God with faith and confidence.

Gospel: Luke 11:1-13

Jesus teaches us to pray.

Luke 11:1-13

Pray as a Child, Calling Out to Your Dear Father

  1. Pray without embarrassment
    1. How does Jesus illustrate asking without shame or embarrassment?
    2. How can sinners like us pray without shame or embarrassment?
  2. Pray expecting the best
    1. Why can you expect the best?
    2. What is best?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.

News & Notes

Baptism: We rejoice with Justin and Carrie Flaten as Connor Harvey Flaten is reborn as a child of God through the water and word of Baptism. What a miracle of the Holy Spirit! Connor was born on June 22. Witnesses are Annie Dingman and Joel & Steph Flaten.

Fair Booth: We are again hosting a fair booth with St. Paul's of Morris at the Steven County Fair. We need your help. If you're able to serve at the booth sometime during the fair, please sign up on the sheet in the narthex. Pastor will call you to schedule a day and time that will coordinate with St. Paul's. No training necessary. It's as easy as smiling and saying, “Hi.” If you have any questions, please ask Pastor Bitter.
