The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
August 8, 2010
Jesus, priceless treasure,
Fount of purest pleasure,
Truest friend to me.
Ah, how long in anguish
Shall my spirit languish,
Yearning, Lord, for thee?
Thou art mine, O Lamb divine!
I will suffer naught to hide thee,
Naught I ask beside thee. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 349:1)
Worship Focus: Set your hearts on things above
Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38
Hymns: 358, 484, 469, 477
First Lesson: Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:18-26
Running after the things under the sun is meaningless. Death overtakes each of us, and we can't take anything with us. So use God's earthly blessings with happiness and contentment, giving thanks to him.
Psalm 34, p. 80
Greater than any earthly blessing is to know the Lord. The Psalm rejoices in the happiness we have as God's people.
Second Lesson: Colossians 3:1-11
Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Gospel: Luke 12:13-21
Jesus warns us against all kinds of greed.
Fair Booth: We are again hosting a fair booth with St. Paul's of Morris at the Steven County Fair. We need your help. If you're able to serve at the booth sometime during the fair, please sign up on the sheet in the narthex. Pastor will call you to schedule a day and time that will coordinate with St. Paul's. No training necessary. It's as easy as smiling and saying, “Hi.” If you have any questions, please ask Pastor Bitter.
