The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

August 8, 2010

Prayer:

Jesus, priceless treasure,

Fount of purest pleasure,

Truest friend to me.

Ah, how long in anguish

Shall my spirit languish,

Yearning, Lord, for thee?

Thou art mine, O Lamb divine!

I will suffer naught to hide thee,

Naught I ask beside thee. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 349:1)

The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

August 8, 2010

Worship Focus: Set your hearts on things above

Order of Worship: Service of the Word, p. 38

Hymns: 358, 484, 469, 477

God's Word

First Lesson: Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:18-26

Running after the things under the sun is meaningless. Death overtakes each of us, and we can't take anything with us. So use God's earthly blessings with happiness and contentment, giving thanks to him.

Psalm 34, p. 80

Greater than any earthly blessing is to know the Lord. The Psalm rejoices in the happiness we have as God's people.

Second Lesson: Colossians 3:1-11

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Gospel: Luke 12:13-21

Jesus warns us against all kinds of greed.

Luke 12:13-21

Enrich Your Life in God

  1. Greed robs you
    1. Describe what's all included in greed.
    2. What symptoms of greed did the man show when he came to Jesus? How does greed infect your heart?
    3. What symptoms of greed did the man in the parable show? How does greed infect your heart?
  2. Only God's barn endures
    1. What barn does Jesus gather his wheat into?
    2. What thoughts enrich our minds as we set our hearts on things above?
