The Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost
August 15, 2010
My faith looks up to thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Now hear me while I pray;
Take all my guilt away;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly thine! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 402:1)
Worship Focus: Faith awaits what's promised
Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26
Hymns: 402, 472, 417 & 404, 214:1, 4
Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156
First Lesson: Genesis 15:1-6
Although childless, Abraham believed that the Savior would come through his descendants. Faith awaits what's promised, even when it seems impossible.
Psalm 33, p. 79
The word of the Lord does not fail. With sureness and certainty, faith holds to what God's Word says.
Second Lesson: Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16
We learn about faith from the example of the ancients.
Gospel: Luke 12:32-40
Faith awaits what's promised. So we don't treasure what this world offers. Rather we serve our Lord awaiting his return.
At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
