The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 22, 2010
Jesus, lead us on
Till our rest is won;
And although the way be cheerless,
We will follow, calm and fearless.
Guide us by your hand
To our fatherland. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 422:1)
Worship Focus: Faithfulness to God's Word brings opposition
Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15
Hymns: 429, 413, 423, 449
First Lesson: Jeremiah 23:23-29
God's Word isn't what our hearts dream up. God's Word is what he has revealed through the Scriptures. Speak his Word faithfully, even if others oppose you.
Psalm 139a, p. 116
No matter how harsh the opposition we face, our God is with us.
Second Lesson: Hebrews 12:1-13
Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus no matter what opposition you face. As you suffer for following Jesus, remember that God is treating you as sons.
Gospel: Luke 12:49-53
Jesus teaches us that as we follow him we won't have peace on earth but division. For the world's hatred against Jesus will not let his people live in peace.
