The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 29, 2010
In you, O Lord, I put my trust --
Leave me not helpless in the dust;
Let me not be confounded.
My faith, O Lord,
Must in your Word
Be always firmly grounded. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 448:1)
Worship Focus: Trust Jesus as you follow him
Order of Worship: Divine Service II, (handout)
Hymns: hymn sing, 431, 478, 446
First Lesson: Judges 6:3, 5, 11-16, 34-40
The Lord trains Gideon to trust his promise of victory over the Midianites.
Psalm 72, p. 93
Jesus reigns over all. Follow him as your King.
Second Lesson: Hebrews 12:18-24
With two vivid pictures the writer contrasts the condemnation God's law brings to a sinner with the salvation that Jesus has won for those who follow him. Trust Jesus for what he has prepared for you.
Gospel: Luke 13:22-30
To follow Jesus doesn't mean to simply know about Jesus. To follow him means to go through the narrow door, to constantly be alert and ready for his return. Take to heart his warning in these words, and trust him with your very self as you follow.
