The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 29, 2010

Prayer:

In you, O Lord, I put my trust --

Leave me not helpless in the dust;

Let me not be confounded.

My faith, O Lord,

Must in your Word

Be always firmly grounded. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 448:1)

The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 29, 2010

Worship Focus: Trust Jesus as you follow him

Order of Worship: Divine Service II, (handout)

Hymns: hymn sing, 431, 478, 446

God's Word

First Lesson: Judges 6:3, 5, 11-16, 34-40

The Lord trains Gideon to trust his promise of victory over the Midianites.

Psalm 72, p. 93

Jesus reigns over all. Follow him as your King.

Second Lesson: Hebrews 12:18-24

With two vivid pictures the writer contrasts the condemnation God's law brings to a sinner with the salvation that Jesus has won for those who follow him. Trust Jesus for what he has prepared for you.

Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

To follow Jesus doesn't mean to simply know about Jesus. To follow him means to go through the narrow door, to constantly be alert and ready for his return. Take to heart his warning in these words, and trust him with your very self as you follow.

Judges 6:3, 5, 11-16, 34-40

The Lord Trains the Timid to Trust

  1. He chooses the timid
    1. Why was Gideon threshing at the winepress?
    2. What does the Lord bring us to see about ourselves as he trains us?
  2. He trains us with his promises
    1. What are some of the promises in God's Word that train us to trust him?
    2. What miraculous things does Jesus give us to train us to trust his promises?
