The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
October 3, 2010
My faith looks up to thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Now hear me while I pray;
Take all my guilt away;
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly thine! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 183:4)
Worship Focus: Our real riches are in heaven
Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26
Hymns: 255, 185, 397, 327
Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156
First Lesson: Amos 6:1-7
Amos teaches us to note well how earthly wealth and luxury all come to an end. Our real treasure isn't on this earth.
Psalm 146, p. 120
Trust the Lord, not human help. He provides what we need in this life and the next.
Second Lesson: 1 Timothy 6:6-16
We take nothing with us. So fight the good fight with all you have in this life, and take hold of the eternal life to which God has called you.
Gospel: Luke 16:19-31
With the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, Jesus calls on us to examine what our real treasure is.
At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
Prayer: We join David and Connie Paul and their family in a prayer of thanksgiving at their fortieth wedding anniversary. We also ask the Lord to watch over Justin Nelson as he begins basic training for the air force in Texas
Pictorial Directory: The proof pages for the pictorial directory have come in. If you would like to review them, please talk to Pastor Bitter this week.
Music Concert: Chris Driesbach will be sharing his music and stories at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1816 SW 5th St., Willmar on Wednesday, October 6 at 6:30pm. He shares his experiences and gratitude with the WELS members and churches for helping Crown of Life in New Orleans recover after Hurricane Katrina. We also have some of his CD's available in the narthex. Immanuel invites us to join them for a light supper as well, starting at 5:30pm.
MLC Ladies Auxiliary: The Martin Luther College Ladies Auxiliary Annual Meeting and 50th Anniversary celebration is Wednesday, October 13, starting at 9:30am at the Wittenberg Collegiate Center Auditorium at Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN. All women of the congregation are invited to attend.
