The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 3, 2010

My faith looks up to thee,

Thou Lamb of Calvary,

Savior divine,

Now hear me while I pray;

Take all my guilt away;

Oh, let me from this day

Be wholly thine! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 183:4)

The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

October 3, 2010

Worship Focus: Our real riches are in heaven

Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26

Hymns: 255, 185, 397, 327

Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156

God's Word

First Lesson: Amos 6:1-7

Amos teaches us to note well how earthly wealth and luxury all come to an end. Our real treasure isn't on this earth.

Psalm 146, p. 120

Trust the Lord, not human help. He provides what we need in this life and the next.

Second Lesson: 1 Timothy 6:6-16

We take nothing with us. So fight the good fight with all you have in this life, and take hold of the eternal life to which God has called you.

Gospel: Luke 16:19-31

With the parable of Lazarus and the rich man, Jesus calls on us to examine what our real treasure is.

Luke 16:19-31

Angels Carried Him to Abraham's Side

  1. Beware the alternative
    1. What's wrong with focusing on earthly things for happiness?
    2. How does faith regard God's Word? How does that show in our lives?
  2. Find comfort in the promise
    1. Why was Lazarus taken to the eternal comfort of heaven at Abraham's side?
    2. What's our comfort when life seems so bad?

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
