The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

October 10, 2010

O God of mercy, God of might,

In love and mercy infinite,

Teach us, as ever in your sight,

To live our lives to you.

Teach us the lesson Jesus taught:

To feel for those his blood has bought,

That ev'ry deed and word and thought

May work a work for you. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 499:1,3)

The Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

October 10, 2010

Worship Focus: Faith serves in humble awe

Order of Worship: The Common Service, p. 15

Hymns: 224, 181, 404, 202 (LAPPY)

God's Word

First Lesson: Habakkuk 1:1-3; 2:1-4

Faith humbly takes God's promises to heart and then lives them out in our lives. The righteous will live by faith.

Psalm 27, p. 75

Faith looks to the Lord for our salvation and humbly waits for his goodness.

Second Lesson: 2 Timothy 2:3-14

Faith is passed on as we teach the next generation the wonderful promises of God's grace in Christ Jesus our Savior.

Gospel: Luke 17:1-10

Jesus describes the actions and attitude of faith.

Luke 17:1-10

What's the Power of a Mustard-Seed Faith?

  1. The power to spiritual help others
    1. What can snap down on faith to destroy it?
    2. What makes rebuking sin difficult?
    3. What makes forgiving sin difficult?
  2. The power that does not look inward
    1. How much of the strength to serve God comes from digging down deep inside ourselves?
    2. Where does the power come from?
