The First Sunday after the Epiphany -- The Baptism of our Lord

January 9, 2011

Hail, O all-inviting Savior!

Gentiles now their off'rings bring,

In your temple seek your favor,

Jesus Christ, our Lord and King.

May we, body, soul, and spirit,

Live devoted to your praise,

Glorious realms of bliss inherit,

Grateful anthems ever raise. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 87:3)

The Lord calls Jesus his servant. As the Christ, the Lord's Anointed, Jesus brought us the justice of forgiveness to heal our bruised hearts. He is light to our eyes blinded by sin and freedom for our souls held captive by guilt.

Psalm 45, p. 83

Jesus is our anointed King.

Second Lesson: Acts 10:34-38

In the house of Cornelius, a Gentile, Peter recounts how Jesus' ministry on earth showed that he is the Lord's Anointed, the Savior for all.

Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17

At Jesus' Baptism, the Holy Spirit and the Father testify that Jesus is the anointed Savior for us sinners.

Matthew 3:13-17

Christ's Baptism Is Yours

  1. He carries your guilt
    1. Why was Jesus baptized?
    2. Why does baptism benefit you?
  2. You share his status
    1. What happened at Jesus' Baptism that also happened at yours?
    2. Why is the Father well-pleased with you and how does that change the way you live?
