The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

February 6, 2011

Your righteousness, O Christ,

Alone can cover me;

No other righteousness

Can set a sinner free.

To whom but you, who can alone

For sin atone, Lord shall I flee? (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 401:5)

The Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany

God's Word

First Lesson: Isaiah 58:5-9

Even an unbeliever can outwardly perform religious ceremonies. But when we're clothed with Jesus and his righteousness, faith shine out in kindness towards others.

Psalm 111, p. 106

What great things our God has done for us! Let us follow in his ways and pursue his righteousness.

Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

As we shine out with righteousness, we don't want to attract people to ourselves. We want to draw them to Jesus as we proclaim Christ crucified, just as Paul did.

Gospel: Matthew 5:13-20

You are salt and light because Jesus has fulfilled the Law and the Prophets for you and brought you to know him in faith. Clothed with Jesus, shine out with righteousness.

Matthew 5:13-20

Why Am I a Christian?

  1. Because Christ fulfilled his mission
    1. What's the wrong reason to think you're a Christian?
    2. What was Jesus' mission?
    3. What kind of righteousness do we need to be a Christian?
    4. How does Jesus' mission make us righteous?
  2. In order to carry out my mission.
    1. How are we salt?
    2. How are we light?

Sermon available on the website or in the narthex

Lord's Supper

At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
