The Second Sunday in Lent
March 20, 2011
May faith looks up to thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Now hear me while I pray;
Take all my guilt away;
Oh, let me from this day-to-day
Be wholly thine! (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 402:1)
Worship Focus: Faith trusts God's promise
Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26
Hymns: 391, 413, 114, 402
Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156
First Lesson: Genesis 12:1-8
The Lord promises to send the Savior who would bring blessings to all people. Abram believes the promises of God and acts on them.
Psalm 121, page 112
Faith relies on the Lord.
Second Lesson: Romans 4:1-5, 13-17
Faith holds on to God's promise that in Christ he justifies the wicked, which includes us. Such faith is credited with Christ's righteousness, just as Abraham was.
Gospel: Matthew 15:21-28
We witness faith at work in the Canaanite woman.
Sermon available on the website or in the narthex
At St. John’s we observe the biblical practice of “close communion,” since the Bible teaches that communing together is an outward sign of the inner closeness of faith that seeks to agree in all that the Bible teaches. Therefore, we ask that only those commune who are confirmed members of our church body and of those churches which have declared fellowship with the WELS. If you have further questions about this, please talk with the pastor.
Mid-week Lent: We welcome Pastor Andrus as we continue our Lenten theme: People of the Passion. March 23: “Caiaphas, the Schemer.” A light supper will be served at 6:00pm before the 7:00pm service.
