The Second Sunday of Easter
May 1, 2011
For the joy your advent gave me, For your gospel's great reward, For your baptism which has saved me, For your supper and your Word, For your death, the bitter scorn, For your resurrection morn: Lord, I thank you and extol you, And in heav'n I shall behold you. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 147:2)
Worship Focus: God is faithful; doubtings, hence!
Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26
Hymns: 159, 150, 165
Personal Preparation for Holy Communion, p. 156
First Lesson: Acts 2:14, 22-32
Beginning at Jerusalem, the Good News of our crucified and risen Savior goes out into all the world.
Second Lesson: 1 Peter 1:3-9
Because Jesus lives, we have a living hope that will not be disappointed. For Jesus has brought you an everlasting inheritance that is yours through faith.
Gospel: John 20:19-31
The risen Jesus appears to his disciples. He is faithful. He has risen just as he promised. He dispels our doubts.
Sermon: John 20:24-31
Holy Communion: We follow the Biblical practice of close communion at St. John's, so we ask that only WELS or ELS members come to the Lord's Supper. If you have questions about this, please speak with the Pastor
From the Youth Group: "Thank you to those who attended the Easter breakfast. Thank you also for blessing us with your donation which helps offset youth group activities!"
Youth Outing: Today the youth group plans to visit West Wind Village to play cards with the residents from 3:30 to 4:30. They will meet at church at 3:00.
Examination: Although we call it Examination Sunday, this is not an exam. Through the work they've done in Catechism class and their faithfulness in hearing our Lord's word, the Confirmands have already demonstrated that they are ready for Confirmation. Today is a confession of faith, so that you too can witness that they share the same faith in Jesus which you have learned from the Scriptures. May our Lord bless his word in their hearts. Our Confirmands this year are Abigail Bitter and Caleb Bitter.
Financial Report: In April the General Fund received $5012.66 and the expenses were $6408.42, leaving a balance of $2083.03. We received $1771.00 in April for missions, bringing our year-to-date total to $3030.75. Our mission commitment for 2011 $8,000.00
