The Seventh Sunday of Easter: The Ascension of our Lord
June 5, 2011
Oh, grant, dear Lord, this grace to me, Recalling your ascension, That I may serve you faithfully, Adorning your redemption; And then, when all my days will cease, Let me depart in joy and peace In answer to my pleading. (Christian Worship: A Lutheran Hymnal 173:3)
Worship Focus: Jesus ascends as our Lord and King
Order of Worship: Service of Word and Sacrament, p. 26
Hymns: 171, 173, 169, 175
First Lesson: Acts 1:1-14
Luke recounts Jesus' ascension along with his parting instructions to his apostles.
Psalm 47, p. 85
Our God has ascended amid shouts of joy.
Second Lesson: 1 Peter 4:12-17; 5:6-11
When you suffer for following Jesus, when Satan prowls around like a lion, remember Jesus' ascension. He reigns over all for you his redeemed child, his blood-bought people. He will lift you up.
Gospel: John 17:1-11
On the night he was betrayed, Jesus prayed this prayer before he came to Gethsemane. His ascension confirms his glory. Through his death and resurrection he brings eternal life to his followers.
Holy Communion: We follow the Biblical practice of close communion at St. John's, so we ask that only WELS or ELS members come to the Lord's Supper. If you have questions about this, please speak with the Pastor
VBS: Vacation Bible School will run from Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15, from 10:00am to noon. Please note the change in date and time. The calendar is not correct.
Recipes: The Ladies Society is still looking for recipes for a cookbook. Please place them in the box in the narthex or email them to Gloria:
Confirmation Robe: We discovered that one of the white confirmation robes is missing. We are not sure which year it went missing. If you have had a child confirmed in the past five years, please make sure the robe didn't get stored away some place. If you find it, please return it to the church as soon as possible.
